One Question to Ask If You Don’t Feel Motivated on Monday

Updated: Aug 17, 2023

“Jeff, I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m just having a hard time being motivated lately.”

I felt for my client. He certainly gifted to do what he was doing. He was smart. He had plenty of work he COULD DO.

But there was something missing…. Energy and desire. Oh, I guess and passion, care, interest, excitement... pretty much no gas in that tank!

Without motivation it’s hard to stay doing what you’re doing for long. If Monday’s feel like a dread, it’s time to say, “What’s up with that?”

If motivation is defined as the driving force that compels us to act towards a particular goal or outcome, then it’s hard to do something when you’re NOT compelled or EMOTIONALLY engaged.

On the other hand,

When you DO feel motivated you feel both tugged even without being told to act and even stick with things until you complete it.

One of the most important questions to ask yourself in this situation is:

What makes this important to me?

Asking yourself this question can help you reconnect with your underlying motivations and values, which can help reignite your motivation.

Consider what you hope to achieve by completing the task or working towards your goal.

How will it benefit:

  • You?

  • Your loved ones?

  • Your community?

  • God’s work in the world?

By reminding yourself of the "why," you may find the intrinsic motivation you need to take action.

Some answers I recently wrote when I asked about my own work of coaching and training coaches.

  • I love seeing people live into their callings and dreams.

  • I see lives changed constantly through coaching.

  • I know I’m gifted to coach.

  • Coaching energizes me.

  • Coaching changes lives... that then change lives.

  • Coaching pays me well.

  • Coaching grants me flexibility to do other things I love.

  • I can coach from anywhere in the world.

  • I’ve invested decades of my life in coaching.

  • I’ve benefitted dramatically by being coached.

  • I believe coaching brings God’s Kingdom into this world in powerful ways

  • Coaches are today’s new spiritual leaders.

Additionally,

Here are some other important questions to ask yourself when you lack motivation:

Am I sure I’m supposed to be doing what I’m doing?

If you say, “I’m not so sure” or certainly “No,” Do make an appointment to meet with a coach! Life’s too short to stay doing things you’re not motivated to do!

If “YES” (you are supposed to be doing this!) then some other questions to ask: (maybe in a journal)

1. What’s holding me back?

2. What are the potential consequences of NOT acting?

3 What small steps can I take right now to make progress?

4. What support or resources do I need to move forward?

5. How can I break the task or goal into smaller, more manageable steps?

By taking the time to reflect on these questions and seeking out the support you need, you can overcome your lack of motivation and move forward towards your goals.

There’s hope for you! Things can and will change!

With you and for you,

Jeff
